How Do You Verify a Ceramic Manufacturer in China?
China ships roughly 65% of the world's ceramic tableware exports — which means every sourcing shortlist is long, and most of it is noise. Verifying a ceramic tableware manufacturer before the deposit is the step that decides whether the rest of your program is procurement or damage control.
Five things to verify before you wire anything.
A glossy catalog proves nothing. When buyers ask how to verify a supplier in China, the answer is always evidence at the same five points — and each one can be checked remotely in a day.
- Business scope. The business license must list ceramics manufacturing or a coherent trade scope, and the registered entity must match the name on the quotation and the bank account.
- Kilns and firing. Real tableware kilns fire high-temp porcelain at 1280–1380°C. Ask which kiln types run your body, and ask for firing logs — a working kiln has them.
- Glaze laboratory. A ceramic tableware manufacturer that ships to regulated markets keeps glaze and pigment records, and can discuss lead-cadmium release testing without prompting.
- Customer references. Ask for two programs of similar scale and check them. References you cannot call are decoration, not evidence.
- Red flags. Prices far below the cluster norm, certificates shown as photos, requests to pay a personal account, or refusal of a live factory walk-through — any one of these ends the conversation.
Verification runs in tiers. Cost follows certainty.
Do not buy an audit before a video call earns it. Each tier below costs more than the last and is only entered when the previous one passes.
| Tier | What you do | Evidence you walk away with |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Desk screening | License scope, years in ceramics, HS 6911/6912 export experience, cluster location | Company profile consistent with a real kiln site |
| 2. Sample run | Request fired production samples under a golden-sample discipline | Ceramic glaze samples from the line, not a showroom |
| 3. Live video audit | Timestamped walk-through: forming, glazing, kilns, packing bench | Recorded footage matched to the registered address |
| 4. On-site audit | A ceramic factory audit station by station — or via a third-party inspector | Written audit report against a checklist |
| 5. Paid pilot | Small first order under full inspection, before scaling | Shipment that passed, plus a working relationship |
Tiers 3–5 can be run on your behalf as part of a CERAMICS sourcing program — see Custom & OEM.
The four claims that fail most often.
| What they say | What to demand instead |
|---|---|
| "We are the factory." | License scope plus a live video from the kiln floor with a same-day date visible. Trading companies can be fine suppliers — but you should know which one you are talking to. |
| "Here are our certificates." | Certificates as photos prove nothing. For food-contact claims, demand per-batch migration test reports available on request, issued by an accredited third-party laboratory. |
| "This price is special for you." | A quote far below the cluster norm means something was removed — wall thickness, firing temperature, or the inspection gate. Ask exactly what. |
| "Pay this account, it is our finance team." | The beneficiary account must carry the registered company name from the license and the quotation. A personal account is a full stop. |
Start where the kilns already are.
Shortlisting inside the major clusters collapses half the verification work, because cluster density itself is evidence. Chaozhou alone accounts for around 30% of global daily-use ceramics sales, and 2024 exports there passed 11.26 billion yuan, up 21%. Jingdezhen carries the high-end and art lines, Dehua the white and gift porcelain, Liling the underglaze color tradition. CERAMICS sources across all four — the cluster-by-cluster comparison is in our ceramics belt guide, and the full verification sequence in how to vet a ceramic manufacturer.

Verification questions buyers ask us.
How do I verify a supplier in China without visiting in person?+
Run the five-point checklist remotely: license scope against the quoted entity, a timestamped kiln-floor video, glaze lab and firing-log evidence, two callable references, and a beneficiary account that matches the license. Only escalate to an on-site ceramic factory audit after those pass — most problems are caught at the desk-screening tier.
Is a trading company always the wrong choice?+
No. A transparent trader with inspection discipline can outperform a mid-size factory on multi-SKU programs; the failure mode is a trader posing as a factory, because then nobody owns the kiln. Verify which one you are dealing with and price the layer accordingly.
What does a professional ceramic factory audit actually cover?+
Station by station: clay body preparation, forming lines, the glaze laboratory, kilns and firing logs, decoration, the QC bench, and the packing line that decides your breakage rate. Each station gets a pass/fail against a written checklist, so the result is a document you can act on, not an impression.
